Brian Culbertson - Funk!

Posted by Shannon Ella on 2017/04/26

When it comes to playing funky music keyboardist Brian Culbertson knows a thing or two about the groove.  Hanging out and jamming with the late Prince and Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire inspired the instrumentalist/producer to reconnect with his love of funk.  Heck - he evens comes from the city where his influences hail from - the windy city of Chicago.  Growing up listening to Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Prince - Brian’s playing of cool keyboard licks just came naturally and he honours these legends in songs like ‘We Got What You Want’, ‘Been Around The World’ and the opening track ‘Get Ready’.  Expect full luscious groovy tunes that feature that Mid West sound not just from Chicago but Minneapolis.  Culbertson collaborated with vocalist/bassist/keyboardist Chance Howard who has worked with Prince and The Time and bassist/guitarist St. Paul Peterson - former member of The Time and Prince’s 1985 passion project The Family.  Like his predecessors Culbertson wanted to keep the vibe loose with that analogue sort of warmth to those famous recordings like Marvin Gaye's stuff from the 70's.  Brian's funk crew provided all the "live" instruments (no sequencing or drum machines were used) like on the sly interpretation of Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up' complete with it's disco undertones and on while spinning Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music' I think my speakers almost blew when i just had to crank it up!  Culbertson's also known for setting a mood with his infectious melodies like on the current Billboard Smooth Jazz Top 30 number one original hit 'Hey Girl'.  Just picture the lights down low, the candles burning and the smooth groove of one of the industries finest multi instrumentalists on the keys.  It's funkalicious!
