Gary Palmer - Coast 2 Coast

Posted by Kat Cullen on 2018/05/07

When I think Chief of Police I think of Marge Gunderson in the movie Fargo portrayed by Oscar winner Frances McDormand and not a smooth soul saxophonist from South Florida!  Former police officer Gary Palmer decided to retire from the force and just focus on the Florida smooth vibes on his latest album ‘Coast 2 Coast’.  Maybe a number of long flights from Fort Lauderdale to L.A. inspired the title.  There he hooked up with producer Paul Brown to work on the title track – a laid back soulful ballad that opens the album, Stanley Clarke’s ‘Lisa’ from the 90’s – romantic and lustful and ‘Land Of The Sun’ co-written by Bob Baldwin, Brown and Daniel Chia with a cool pop theme highlighting Palmers sax sound.  Featuring Baldwin on the keyboards it’s a super charged funk fest - something that Brown loves to bring to the table when it comes to catchy, memorable tunes.  Producer/songwriter/guitarist Nils was brought in for his seamless approach to producing on tracks like ‘Waterfalls’ and ‘Windsurfer’ both something that Palmer and Nils can relate to.  By bringing in their surroundings to the fold that makes for a warm breezy sound that works for this saxophonist who said on his website that this album is a “a rich musical experience that’s a cross between smooth jazz and R&B with an old school feel”.  Plus in honour of Mother’s Day the credits notes mention that Gary dedicated this project to his late mother Elsie Palmer.  She would be proud Chief!
