Jonathan Butler "Close To You"

Posted by April Galenzoski on 2018/10/22

As a child of the 70s, there is nothing I love more than a great old Burt Bacharach song. One of the first singles I ever bought was Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You", closely followed by Dionne Warwick's "What The World Needs Now" and of course The Carpenters' "Close To You." So what a delicious delight it is for me to listen to Jonathan Butler's new collection of musical memories.

With the first few notes of the lead-off single "What The World Needs Now" I realized this record is going to be something special.  Yes, we are treated to Butler's velvet vocals but each track brings something new, fresh and unique. A new beat, a new spin, a new take - every single song is infused with Butler's own sensibility.

Bring on the horns and salsa on "I Say A Little Prayer"!  "Alfie" is all rich lushness highlighted by Butler's passionate performance. The title track brings a special groove to a true classic.  And the final track "A House Is Not A Home" is intimate, compelling and pure Butler, living each lyric as if he had written it himself.

He says: "This record was inspired by my fiance Nadira Kimberly. At home one night, we played and sang together as we listened to 'Close To You' by the amazing Burt Bacharach. This really opened the door for me to do this amazing man's music. In 1975 I was 13 years old when my first single was released, 'Please Stay' by none other than Burt Bacharach. It's like I've come full circle."

How fortunate for us!  There are a lot of tribute albums and theme albums and memory albums, many of them just same old rehash boring. Not "Close To You". It's as original as Jonathan Butler himself - an intensely personal recognition of one of the greatest songwriters of our time.
