Marion Meadows - Soul City

Posted by April Galenzoski on 2018/03/12

You never know how anyone gets their start, do you? I love finding out and Marion Meadows' story is a good one. Picture this: he was standing in Grand Central Station (New York) and while waiting for a train, decided to pull out his horn and play under the huge dome. His sweet sound caught the attention of fellow traveler, producer and TV composer Jay Chattaway, who happened to be passing by. Chattaway was so impressed with Meadows’ sound that he hooked him up with legendary keyboardist Bob James. And that was the start of a long and beautiful solo career for Dr. Meadows. Dr. Meadows? Well yes indeed, Marion received a doctorate in 2016 from Wilberforce University!

Soul City, his newest release, carries on a fine tradition of soul-full sax, always grooving on point with precision and passion. The title track (featuring Norman Brown on guitar) sets the mood, popping and pulsing with perfect panache. Maysa and Peter White show up on "Dreamin" - a trifecta of top talent.  "Time After Time" (yes, the Cyndi Lauper classic) showcases Peabo Bryson's rich vocals paired with Marion's warm sax, a truly beautiful blend. Will Downing takes us to the beach on Samba De Playa and then there is my personal favourite "No Wind, No Rain" (featuring Dana Lauren on vocals) where Marion's sax literally becomes the second voice on a dreamy duet.
Marion's distinguished career has included musical moments with Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, Bob Baldwin, Chuck Loeb and many others. No wonder so many stars show up on Soul City!
By the way, the first time I met him we were on the Smooth Jazz Cruise and I attended his spin class. Yes, Marion is also a semi-pro cyclist (and a graphic artist and designer). To be truthful I only lasted about 15 minutes. Thankfully I last a lot longer with his marvellous music. Add Soul City to your list of must-have new records. We can never have too much soul, right?
