Michael Buble - Love

Posted by Riley Welch on 2019/01/14

love love love.

What a beautiful return to music for the incomparable Michael Bublé. This new collection called love (yes, all lower case) ends a two year sabbatical from creating music, during which time Michel tended to his young son who was gravely ill. His son recovered and it was time to let the music flow.

The concept for the new album emerged almost effortlessly. Michael says  “The only question was not ‘Am I going back to work.’ It was ‘Can I do it on my terms? Can I do the songs I love with the people I love the way that I love and do it with pure joy and bliss?’  And once I knew that was possible, it was a go.”

The vision was simple: look at love in all its facets. “This would be my group of short stories that would be my theory of love,” he says. “The good, the bad, the light, the dark." He continues “I know it sounds so artsy-fartsy, but I think the songs chose me. It’s strange how the universe will just drop things into your lap.”

The Universe chose extremely well. My Funny Valentine brings a new James Bond-esque sensibility never before heard with this oft-rendered standard. La Vie En Rose puts us squarely in a Paris cafe and the counterpoint provided by Cecile McLorin Salvant is "parfait". The lead-off single Love You Anymore brings an updated mood to this delightfully old school record. And I love love love the story behind the Rodgers and Hart classic Where Or When. Apparently Michael had a very definitive idea of how he wanted to sing it but a difficult time imparting his idea to producer to David Foster. So he went into the vocal booth and laid down his vocal A Capella. The next day when he arrived back at the studio Mr. Foster had orchestrated that solo rendition magnificently.

Probably the most poignant track on this album is Forever Now, a song for his son. Just try not to cry.

Michael Bublé is in a class by himself when it comes to honest crooners. No games, no gimmicks, no tricks. Just the real deal singing real songs with real emotion and of course real talent.

No wonder we love love love him.
