Michael Lington - Silver Lining

Posted by Kat Cullen on 2018/06/18

As soon as I pressed play to start saxophonist Michael Lington’s new album ‘Silver Lining’ it felt like I was transported back in time.  It reminded me of the old way of recording by artists like Al Green and Tower Of Power with an "off the floor" recording and straight to analogue tape.  That 70’s vibe is all over this album produced by Barry Eastmond (Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Freddie Jackson) who takes that up tempo soul, funk and R&B interest of Michael’s and delivers it with the lead off single and track to Michael’s 10th album in 20 years featuring Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics on ‘City Life' .  With it’s punchy but warm rhythms provided by drummer Freddie Campbell (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, American Idol), Freddie Washington on bass (Steely Dan) and the guitar crunch of Stewart, it lets you know you’re in for a good listening experience.  The horn section really kicks in on the second cut ‘Break The Ice’ with trumpet, tenor sax, trombone arranged by legendary Stax session musician Lester Snell along with Eastmond and Lington providing a catchy groove that will get you swaying!  The main highlight of the album is Michael’s version of Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions 1965 hit ‘People Get Ready’.  Such an iconic song but who would do the vocal? To get the full effect they recorded it in Memphis with Stax veterans William Bell on vocals and bassist Leroy Hodges to give it that southern soul trademark sound.  Other notables include ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ with that Sanborn influence,  ‘M-Funk’ featuring Ray Parker Jr. on guitar is 4:55 is true bliss and Tower Of Power’s 1973 classic ‘So Very Hard To Go’ with singer Dorian Holley (Michael Jackson) pays tribute to that vintage sound of feel good tunes.  Make this part of your road trip this summer!
