Richard Elliot - In The Zone
I can't believe it's been 25 years since saxophonist Richard Elliot released his first solo release. In honour of this achievement the former Tower of Power instrumentalist has released In The Zone paying tribute to the 70's icons that he grew up listening to like David Sanborn, Grover Washington Jr. and Bob James. It's a follow up to his last release Rock Steady which honoured the R n' B vocalists of the 70's. This time he takes it to another level with nine new originals co-written with Jeff Lorber and you know it's going to be a funk affair! Helping out laying down the riffs are drummers Lil' John Roberts (Jill Scott) and Tony Moore (Gerald Albright). Bassists include Alex Al (Michael Jackson, George Benson, Kenny G) and Nate Phillips (Jeff Golub, Peter White) both providing the groove with guitarist Dwight Sills, Tony Maiden and even Lorber! Highlights include the title cut with horns by David Mann, Richard and Jeff's take on Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, the catchy first single Boom Town and the slower groove of Just A Taste.
He's "in the zone" on this one. Great sounding album. Here's to another 25 Richard!
