Rick Braun - Around The Horn

Posted by Kat Cullen on 2017/03/13

I always viewed the trumpet to be the most simplistic instrument to play but in reality it takes a lot of talent.  It’s all about valves and using your tongue. But what trumpeter Rick Braun has come up with on his 14th solo album for Shanachie Entertainment is something that will fit in perfect with your spring plans.

11 songs that evoke lush sunsets and breathtaking views on your hikes.  One of the lines by guest vocalist/songwriter/co-producer/keyboardist/synth bassist John Stoddart is on 'Everything Is Alright' is “...I love walking with my girl, I love talking with my baby and when I hold her tight, everything is alright”.  The tune sways with it’s catchy, funk filled grooves with Braun on trumpet and and valve trombone, Third Richardson on drums and Gerey Johnson on guitar.  That’s followed by the cool chill mix on the Alicia Keys song 'In Common'.  I love songs like this where it just cruises along with a hypnotic beat with horns!  Guitarist Peter White brings his compelling nylon string playing on the Charlie Puth/Selena Gomez pop hit 'We Don’t Talk Anymore'.  Cool to hear the song done with a smooth jazz vibe.

Good friend Jonathan Butler inspired Rick to do Coldplay’s 'Yellow' with the help of acoustic bassist Kenny Wild. Braun’s arrangement is something to behold with Stoddart on piano and the smooth twist of the hit song make it a memorable track.  Be sure to check out Braun’s other original songs like 'So Strong', 'Pool Dancer', 'Love Take Me' and 'I Love Your More' with the assistance of Stoddart - a team worth hooking up on a future release!
