The Song Garden
Smooth and sultry singer, Will Downing, has been entertaining our ears for over three decades now. The Song Garden is his 24th album and it holds up as they all have done since his debut album back in the late 80’s. Album after album, the “Prince Of Sophisticated Soul”, as he calls himself, gives his fans stellar tracks inspired by Luther Vandross and Michael Jackson. ‘Stand Up’ kicks it off - a Black Lives Matter anthem - no surprise given that all songs were recorded during 2020 - the year of civil unrest and a global pandemic. Will hooked up online with his longtime songwriting collaborator, guitarist Randy Bowland, as well as bassist Al Turner (Patti Labelle, Randy Crawford, Oleta Adams) and drummer Judge J.J. Williams (Gerald Albright ’30’ album), so they could send each other music files and remain socially distanced. This is a "pandemic record", made alone in the studio, while still allowing creativity and the inspiration to write compositions that sound euphonious like ‘Right Where You Are’. First recorded as just a single after a European tour was cancelled because of COVID, Will wanted to reach out to his fanbase overseas with this groovy and danceable tune. Singer Maysa was "Zoomed in" for “Give You” - the last track on this 7 song album- 4:46 of pure bliss. The two voices are a match made in heaven especially with a piano accompaniment from Bob Baldwin. It leaves you wanting more - but don't worry! This guy is a workaholic. What sprouts from the song garden will be served very shortly.
